Getting started with and maintaining a local government blog can be an impactful digital communication strategy. To give you some ideas, here are some great examples of municipalities who are leveraging blogs to engage their communities.

Provo, Utah

The Mayor of Provo, UT is an avid blogger who writes about a variety of topics, including elections, community construction projects, and even featuring beautiful images of the city.

Eden Prairie, Minnesota

The City of Eden Prairie, MN features news and views their City Manager, Police Department, Fire Department and Community Liquor Store. Example posts from the City Manager include summaries of city council meetings, sharing of recent awards and requests for what residents think of current guidelines. The Police Department has blogged about recent citizen commendations, community safety issues and recruiting for new officers.

Gilbert Arizona

In Gilbert, AZ, the Town Manager, Police Chief and Chief Digital Officer have blogs where they share insights, videos and other information about their community.

Longmont, Colorado

The City of Longmont, CO had a limited-time blog dedicated to the construction of their Sunset Street Bridge. The blog tracked the construction’s progress, provided notice of road closures in the surrounding area, and even a peek into how the bridge was being built.
